Not every insurance company is comfortable insuring a boudoir photography studio. Because boudoir and nude photography are considered “higher risk” by some providers, photographers can suddenly find themselves uninsured without warning. Unfortunately, we experienced this firsthand with The Hartford. Based on their internal policies, they can remove boudoir studios from coverage at any time, and that is exactly what happened to us — no warning, no discussion, just canceled coverage. That experience taught us how important it is to choose an insurance company that truly understands photographers and the boudoir industry.
Many general business insurance companies are unfamiliar with boudoir photography and may see it as outside their acceptable coverage categories. Even if they initially approve your business, policies can change later. This creates unnecessary risk for photographers running a professional studio.
That is why we recommend avoiding providers that are not photography-focused. A boudoir studio is still a professional photography business, but not every insurance company sees it that way.
The safest and most trusted option for boudoir photographers is Professional Photographers of America (PPA). Their general liability insurance is built specifically for photographers, making them much more understanding of how photography businesses operate.
The standard recommendation is a $1,000,000 general liability policy, which protects your business in case of accidents, injuries, or property damage during a session. PPA also offers equipment insurance through their insurance provider, allowing you to protect your cameras, lenses, lighting gear, and studio equipment in one place.
It is also best to become a PPA member first because membership often provides access to better insurance rates and additional professional benefits.
Most boudoir photographers can expect to pay between $500 and $1,500 per year depending on:
While insurance may feel like an extra expense in the beginning, it is one of the most important investments you can make to protect your business, your clients, and your equipment.
Insurance is something many photographers overlook until it is too late. Boudoir photography comes with unique challenges, so choosing the right insurance provider matters. Avoid companies that do not fully support boudoir studios, and work with photography-focused organizations like PPA that understand the industry. A solid insurance policy gives you peace of mind and allows you to focus on what truly matters — creating elegant, intimate, and artistic experiences for your clients.
